Deadly Secrets

Mapleton Mystery Book 1

Author: Terry Odell

Mapleton, Colorado's police chief, Gordon Hepler, would rather be on the streets than behind a desk dealing with budgets and the town council, but he promised his late mentor he'd accept the position. And to Gordon, a promise is a promise, even if the person you made it to isn't around anymore. However, doubts creep in, and he wonders if he was shoved into the job because his mentor thought he couldn't cut it on the streets.

Everything changes when a fatal traffic accident well outside Mapleton seems connected to elderly Rose and Sam Kretzer, two of Mapleton's most beloved citizens. The arrival of Megan, the Kretzer's grown ward, and Justin, their grandson add to his troubles when Megan is mugged. In addition, Justin is renovating his grandparents' house despite their objections, and then someone breaks in and the house is ransacked. When Gordon ties the car accident to a grisly murder in Mapleton—the first anyone in town can remember—he's afraid he's into more than he bargained for.

His fears are realized when his investigation seems to link the Kretzers to a Nazi war criminal. Can he work with the big-city detective brought in to assist? Will he be able to solve the crime without revealing the secrets of his citizens?

DEADLY SECRETS revolves around a secret journal kept by a Nazi during WWII, and the lengths people will go to protect those they love. Set in a small Colorado community, Deadly Secrets deals with people trying to do what they think is right while protecting those they love.

Author Description:
I was born in Los Angeles and now make my home in Divide, Colorado. An avid reader (my parents tell everyone they had to move from our first home because I finished the local library), I always wanted to "fix" stories so the characters did what I wanted, in books, television, and the movies. Once I began writing, I found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery I intended to write rapidly became a romance.

However, my entry into the world of writing can be attributed to a "mistake" when my son mentioned the Highlander television series on a visit home. Being the "good mother" I began watching the show and soon connected with the world of fanfiction, first as a reader, then as a critique giver, and then, one brave weekend, I wrote my first short story.

Things snowballed and soon I was writing my first original novel. Much later, I mentioned something about a recent Highlander episode to my son, and he said, "Oh, I've never actually watched the show, I just thought the concept was cool." Little did he know what he'd started.

I love getting into the minds of my characters, turning them loose in tight spots and seeing what they do. Too often, they surprise me.

My published works include the Pine Hills Police Series, the Blackthorne, Inc. series as well as the Romantic Suspense novel, What's in a Name? and the Mapleton Mystery series. I've also published numerous short stories with The Wild Rose Press.

Following the sudden death of a co-worker, psychotherapist Letty Whittaker learns she has “inherited” her colleague’s case load. As professional executor, Letty assumes responsibility for Regina’s clients, including those from Devlin House, the local domestic abuse shelter where Regina had worked . . . and died.

As Letty takes up her duties, she makes some disturbing discoveries: a set of files that Regina had stolen from the shelter; an AWOL resident, missing since the morning after Regina’s death; an ethics complaint Regina had made against an unnamed peer. Are the files—or the abused women they represented—connected with Regina’s death? Is the missing client on the run from her abusive husband or somebody even scarier? Who was Regina reporting to the state licensing board, and why?

And, more importantly, just what kind of trouble has Letty really inherited?

Author Description:
I'm a psychotherapist/office manager/writer, not always in that order. Some folks wonder why a therapist would gravitate toward writing mysteries. It's the people thing. Both of my passions deal with relationships and exploring the past to gain a deeper understanding--and, perhaps, better control of--the present. My favorite quote is by Oscar Wilde: "The final mystery is oneself." It seems to cover facets of both my careers. So I stole it. I'm also a wife and a mother of two beautiful children. Three, if you count the husband; usually I do. We own and operate a residential construction company. He swings the hammer; I do the marketing, the paperwork, and deal with any overly emotional, what-do-you-mean-you-can't-put-roof-trusses-up-in-a-thunderstorm? clients. Strangely enough, I often come up with ideas for creative murders and hiding bodies during business hours. I mention this for no reason at all. THE ENEMY WE KNOW is the first in the Letty Whittaker 12 Step series, followed by THE ONE WE LOVE and THE SECRETS WE KEEP. Coming soon: THE BLOOD WE SPILL. I'm hoping to earn enough money to provide orthodontics for my English bulldog, Belle.
